Set up from an AI assistant
Connect dagctl to Claude Code, Claude, Codex, or ChatGPT and ask it to set up your project. It creates your organization, connects GitHub, deploys your project, and starts the first run. You approve each step.
How it works
dagctl runs an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server at https://api.dagctl.io/mcp. Once connected and signed in, your assistant acts in dagctl as you, with your permissions. It can:
- See who you are and which organizations you belong to (
whoami) - Create an organization (
create_organization), which starts a 14-day free trial, no credit card. It tells you the terms first. - Give you a GitHub App install link to approve (
connect_github) and list the repositories you granted - Create and deploy a project (
create_project) - Start a run and check the result (
trigger_project_run,list_project_runs) - Check which environment variables exist (
list_environment_variables), names only - Show your profile and organizations (
get_profile)
It can't create API tokens, invite teammates, change billing, or read secret values. It never accepts passwords, keys, or tokens through the chat: if you offer one, the assistant refuses and points you to the web app.
Set it up
-
Add dagctl. Run this in your terminal.
-
Sign in. Open Claude Code, type
/mcp, and sign in to dagctl in the browser. -
Paste this.
Using dbt? Say dbt instead of SQLMesh.
Note
Step 1 runs in your terminal, not inside Claude Code. Step 2 runs inside Claude Code.
For the Claude desktop app and claude.ai.
-
Open Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector.
Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector
-
Name it
dagctland paste the URL. -
Sign in to dagctl and approve access.
-
Start a new chat and paste this.
Using dbt? Say dbt instead of SQLMesh.
Note
This is set up in Settings. There is no chat command for it.
-
Add dagctl.
-
Sign in. Adding the server does not sign you in.
-
Start Codex and paste this.
Using dbt? Say dbt instead of SQLMesh.
Codex IDE extension
Gear menu → MCP servers → Add server → Streamable HTTP → paste https://api.dagctl.io/mcp → restart the extension.
Menu names may differ
ChatGPT menu names and Developer mode availability may vary by plan.
-
Turn on Developer mode in Settings.
Settings → Connectors → Advanced → Developer mode
-
Create a connector.
Connectors → Create · Name:
dagctl· Authentication: OAuth -
Sign in to dagctl and approve access.
-
Start a new chat and paste this.
Using dbt? Say dbt instead of SQLMesh.
Note
ChatGPT asks you to confirm each step that changes something, such as creating your organization or project. That is expected. Approve to continue.
Signing in
Sign-in uses OAuth with your normal dagctl login. The assistant opens a browser window, you sign in and approve access. No API token to copy.
What the assistant will ask
- An organization name. It states the trial and Terms of Service before creating it.
- To approve GitHub. Open the link, choose the account that owns your repositories, pick repositories, then approve dagctl a second time. Come back to the chat after.
- Which repository to deploy.
- To add warehouse credentials. Unless your project uses DuckDB, the assistant stops and asks you to add them at Settings → Secrets in the web app (details), then continues when you confirm.
- Whether to start the first run.
Keep passwords out of the chat
Enter warehouse passwords in the web app, not the chat. Anything typed in chat is sent to your assistant's provider.
Troubleshooting
The connector says "not authorized". Sign in again: /mcp in Claude Code, codex mcp login dagctl in Codex, or reconnect the connector in Claude or ChatGPT settings.
The organization is still provisioning. New organizations take a few minutes. Until ready, the API returns org_provisioning. Wait, then ask the assistant to continue.
ChatGPT asks you to confirm every change. Expected. Approve each one.
